BARBARA HUBERT: NIGHT OF THE FALLING STARS

Night of the Falling Stars
Barbara Hubert

Barbara Hubert graduated with distinction from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. She defended her diploma in 1999 in the significant studio of Professor Leszek Misiak. The artist is also a PhD candidate in Fine Arts. Awarded the Medal of Merit for Polish Culture in 2020, Hubert is one of the valued figures of contemporary Polish figurative painting with mystical tendencies.

Barbara Hubert successfully combines her artistic work with pedagogical activities. The artist has so far participated in numerous exhibitions both in Poland and abroad (including the USA).

The exhibition “Night of the Falling Stars” is a testimony of the artist’s latest painting explorations. It features several dozen works. The newest paintings explore central motifs in Barbara Hubert’s oeuvre: the landscape, processed by the artist, moves away from literal representation, resulting in synthetic, ethereal compositions.

The presented paintings are a development of earlier cycles, including “Full Moon.” The colors of the evening and night sky dominate the images—violets, deep blues, and pinks—which, combined with the dynamically textured surface of the canvas, give a sense of motion. The captivating tonal transitions and color combinations, inspired by the changes in the sky, light, and cloud formations, bring a feeling of peace and meditative mindfulness.

Professor Jan Tarasin recalled a moment from his childhood when, in wonder, standing on the threshold of his family home, he looked up at the night sky, discovering the spreading constellations of stars. For Barbara Hubert, this amazement at the beauty of natural phenomena also becomes a constitutive source of her creativity. In the artist’s paintings, the cosmos opens before the viewer like a secret book. This painting is an attempt to record those magnificent moments of awe.

This painting is also a reflection on the fleeting nature of phenomena. The titular falling stars, though they vanish in a fraction of a second, leave behind the memory of extraordinary beauty and mystery.
